Reclaim your Night: Feminist Chants for Marches, Protests, and Parties

April 10, 2011

in Activism

Here is a list of helpful, feministy chants for every occasion you might need to shout down patriarchy. Hannah Paterson, the amazing Welfare Officer of UMSU, compiled these, but she wanted a wider audience. Fly, my pretties, fly! Chant and cheer and win us our rights!

Oh you know. You might find these useful. *shrugs*

Whatever we wear, wherever we go, YES means YES and NO means NO!

1. 2,4,6,8, stop the violence stop the rape

2. Tell me what a feminist looks like, This is what a feminist looks like

3. RIOT DON’T DIET, GET UP GET OUT AND TRY IT (x2)

4. We have the right to not be scared at night!

5. Whatever we wear, wherever we go yes means yes and no means no!

6. Non, nein, nada, no! Whatever the language, no means no!

7. NO means NO – it doesn’t mean maybe! Don’t touch me – I’m not your baby!

8. Everwhere we go-o – people always ask us – who we are, and where do we come from – So we tell them – WE’RE ALL FEMINISTS! LOVELY LOVELY FEMINISTS! And if you can’t hear us – we’ll shout a bit louder!

9. Women united will never be defeated!

10. Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Sexual Violence has got to go!

11. Feminists unite. Reclaim the night!’

12. When bigots attack – We fight back.

13. The feminists united, will never be defeated!

14. Hey, mister! Get off my sister!

15. 2 – 4 – 6 – 8 Stop the violence, stop the rape! 3 – 5 – 7 – 9 The rape conviction rate is a crime!

16. You’ve got anger, soul and more! Take to the street and let it roar!

17. Say it once, say it again, NO EXCUSE FOR VIOLENT MEN.

18. I am not your girl, and I don’t want a date, So get your hands from round my waist and JOG ON, MATE!

19. Stand up WOMEN make your choice, side by side reclaiming the night, for together we are strong, making our nights safe.

20. 1, 2, 3, 4 We won’t take it anymore! 5, 6, 7, 8 No more violence! No more hate!

21. Hey hey! Ho ho! Patriarchy has got to go!

22. Not the church! Not the State! Women must control our fate!

23. Claim our bodies, Claim our right, Take a stand, take back the night!

A woman cuts down a patriarchal penis tree thing.

Why do you think the cartoon is funny ?
You think women should cut men’s penises ?
Do you hate men that much ?
Would a cartoon showing a man taking an axe to a womans breasts or vagina be funny ?

I cant see how this cartoon showing this violent act can be funny.

Well, I thought it was funny because I thought the penis with little eyes was quite cute, actually.

But the idea is that the cartoon is about patriarchy rather than penises, which isn’t especially funny at all, and I don’t think the cartoon is meant to be humourous. I just like the little eyes.

I don’t think it’s funny it’s serious we shouldn’t cut them off but men are way to cocky and it’s not right to just sit back and let women get raped or sexually abused!!

Very good start! I’ve taken the liberty of pretending there are numbers in front of the list of chants. The ones I really like are: #2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 20, 21 and 22. For me, the problems with the rest are either: they are too long for people to be able to follow easily, the poetic cadence is just a bit off (and will therefore be difficult for people to chant together) or there is a violent connotation (i.e. riot). And although I get the idea behind the cartoon, I agree that we really need to steer clear of any images or wording that promotes violence, puts others down or mocks others. Will there be posters printed FOR people to take or are we putting suggested posters online for marchers to download and print themselves?

Hello! I don’t know who you are writing to because I posted this 6 years ago and I have no intention of creating posters for anything, but I loved your numbering suggestion and have numbered all of the chants.

Also welcome to everyone who is here to resist Donald Trump’s inauguration. Rock on, you guys. – Sarah

Thanks for the slogans! Very useful. I will use some of them for my show! We need to remember our herstory!! If we don’t do it, who else, not the history taught in schools for sure!
